Hybrid Refuge Requirements
A refuge is a powerful insect resistance management tool that works in your fields and fits the way you farm. The 2009 refuge requirements allow you the option on each farm, of planting up to 80% or your corn acres with insecticide-traited corn. A refuge of at least 20% of your acres must be planted with non-insecticide traited corn. The non-insect protected corn refuge on each farm may be arranged in a number of recommended spatial configurations (as shown on page 57). These options provide you with the flexiblity to incorporate a non-insect protected corn refuge into your farm operation without lessening the effectiveness of your resistance program. Growers who fail to comply, risk losing access to the product.*

"The primary purpose of a refuge is to maintain a small population of insects nearby that are susceptible to the insecticide found in insecticide-traited hybrids. The refuge should be planted with an agronomically similar hybrid and as close as possible to and at the same time as the majority of your protected corn. With this refuge, you allow insects to survive without exposure to the insecticide protein. This ensures that susceptible insects are nearby to mate with any rare, resistant insects that may emerge from the corn. Susceptibility is then passed on to their offspring. Any non insecticide-traited corn acres planted on your farm near insecticide-traited corn can serve as a refuge. The refuge must be on every farm where you plant insecticide-traited corn and be managed the same to ensure that susceptible insects in the refuge will find and mate with any rare resistant insects emerging from the insecticide-traited corn. Your neighbor's corn will most likely not be a similar hybrid and may be managed using different practices. |
